The motor on your BionX is maintenance-free because there are no parts in friction. In position -1 to - 4, the motor becomes a generator. The same phenomenon occurs when using the generative brake. The system acts like a brake and returns the energy  accumulated to the battery, recharging it partially..

  A  (16 ") 40,6 cm frame, (46 lb) 20,8 kg, with the intelligent system  BionX, controlled by computer aiding the cyclist on 5 levels of your choice 0%, 25%, 50%, 100% or 200%; as well as 4 levels of regeneration, during descent and braking,  the motor transforms itself by means of the computer into a generator charging the battery; maintenance-free motor; the control lever attached to the handlebars allows you to activate and deactivate  energy from the battery, to determine speed in kilometers or in miles, total distance, time distance, energy level of the battery, your 4 number personal identification number (N.I.P.)  for the alarm system, without your N.I.P. the alarm emits a sound and  generator mode activates to the maximum rendering the bicycle  too difficult to pedal for the intruder.
Approximately 25 to 80 Km of autonomy depending on the level of aid chosen.
The maximal speed of the motor is 32 Km/h.
The battery recharges in less than 3 hours and it is easily removed from the bicycle for recharging inside a restaurant or other area.
